Famous Cuisines in North Europe

At present, the term North Europe signifies a number of countries like Aland Islands, Channel Islands, Denmark, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, Guernsey, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands, Sweden, and United Kingdom. Every country has some favorite cuisines of their own. Thus the famous cuisines in North Europe may be classified into:

1.British cuisine (that includes English cuisine, Scottish cuisine, Welsh cuisine, Anglo-Indian cuisine, and Modern British cuisine)
2.Danish cuisine
3.Finnish cuisine
4.Icelandic cuisine
5.Irish cuisine
6.Lappish cuisine
7.Latvian cuisine
8.Lithuanian cuisine
9.Norwegian cuisine
10.Swedish cuisine

All the cuisines of North Europe are determined by the climate of that particular country. Among the famous cuisines in North Europe, British cuisine is the most popular cuisine. Among the traditional British cuisine mention may be made of the Sunday Roast that includes roast potatoes together with a piece of roasted meat which may be beef, lamb, or chicken and some sorted vegetables served in thick gravy. After the World War II, turkey roast became a favorite Christmas cuisine. An English breakfast will include grilled tomatoes, fried bread, black pudding, baked beans, fried mushrooms, sausages, and eggs either fried or boiled or scrambled.

Danish cuisine on the other hand, is a diet rich in fat and is traditionally heavy consisting of carbohydrates, meat, and fish. This is mainly due to the geographical location of the country as well as the climate of the country that is characterized by long winters. Agriculture had always predominated the Danish society, meaning that the country was largely dependent on cereal products, dairy products, pork, seafood, apples, plums, carrots, potatoes, onions, beer and bread. Thus Danish cuisines are largely based on the available products.

Finnish cuisine is based on whole meal products like rye, barley, oats and berries. Finnish cuisine primarily features fish and meat. But Icelandic cuisine features mainly fish as the country abounds in fish. Apart from that lamb and dairy products complete the cuisine of Iceland.
