As is evident from its very name, the North Europe is constituted of countries belonging to the northern part of Europe. The countries considered to be a part of Northern Europe includes the Nordic countries, the United Kingdom, the countries along the coast of the Baltic and the North Sea and several other smaller countries situated nearby. In the period before the 19th century, the term Nordic was used for the Nordic countries, European Russia and Baltic Countries. In the context of the European Union, Netherlands is included along with the Scandinavian countries and UK, in the list of North European countries. In the present times the term, North European countries is used to describe a Geo-Political boundary, in the northern part of Europe.
The major North European countries are:
United Kingdom – The country of United Kingdom consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The country consists of the island of Great Britain, the northern part of Ireland and several small neighboring islands. It is surrounded by the water of the Atlantic Ocean, North Sea, Irish Sea and the English Channel. This country has a great historical past. The colonies of the United Kingdom were spread all over the world. The country is also famous for its castles, palaces and museums. London, the capital of UK is situated on the banks of river Thames and houses such world famous structures like the Westminster Abbey and the Big Ben.
Ireland – The third largest island in Europe, Ireland is famous all over the world for its scenic beauty. The country of Ireland also has many great pieces of architecture. The country had been attacked time and again by its next door neighbors, the Great Britain. Ireland gained independence though lost its northern part to Britain. Dublin, the capital of Ireland is a city of great historical significance.
Denmark – it is the southernmost of the Nordic countries and is the smallest one as well. The literal meaning of the name of the country is the “boundary of the Danes'. Denmark is surrounded by the Northern and the Baltic seas. The country has a long history comprising of the kings and legends. The country is studded with castles.
Sweden – Another Scandinavian country famous for its natural beauty.
Norway – A Nordic country which has famous cave paintings at Alta. It is known as the home of Nobel Prize.
Iceland – A beautiful country in the vicinity of the Polar Regions, Iceland is famous for its breathtaking landscape and adventure tourism.
Finland – A beautiful country which shares its borders with Sweden, Norway and Russia. Many famous medieval structures are present in Finland.
